Do both you and your spouse have smart phones?  Will you spouse agree to share location with you?

My finance and I decided several years ago that we would simply share our locations with each other as a means of building trust and to help strengthen our relationship.  Google latitude is a great solution for this.

Google Latitude is available for most smart phones, and is a simple downloaded application.  It’s completely free has enough basic features to allow you to easily locate your spouse.  It is not however a robust tracking solution, and does not provide the ability to replay location history.  That said, it’s a great solution for trusting spouses.

Here is what you can do with Google Latitude

  1. Share you location
  2. Check in at your location and update you Latitude “friends”
  3. Check the location of a friend
  4. Get updates on your phone or PC browser
  5. View your location history

Google latitude is tightly integrated with Google Maps, which is great.  One application interface for both navigation and location tracking.  It is supported on Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, as well as via your browser .

To get started, just go to your browser and search for Google Latitude, it will take you to the welcome screen.  You can input your phone number to have installation instructions mailed to you.  Alternatively go to your smart phone application search tool and search for Google Latitude.  Either should work just fine.

Latitude is permission based, you tell Latitude who you are willing to share you location with.  If your spouse has agreed to share location, there should be no reason why sharing is not always enabled.

To determine if your spouse sharing is on, simply look at the last location report, if the last update is reasonably current, then sharing is active .  Latitude does not update at regular time intervals, but does “smart updates” based upon movement.

Certainly Latitude is not foolproof, it is easily disabled.  It only shares the location of the phone and is not physically tied to a vehicle’s location like other covert tracking solutions.   It also is not hardwired to a vehicle’s power system, like better tracking solutions are – so if the phone’s  battery dies, tracking stops.  In this case, the phones last location is shown in Google Latitude.

If you think your spouse is cheating, then you really need a covert spouse tracking solution and Latitude is not the solution.  If on the other hand you trust your spouse, but want the peace of mind that comes with knowing their location, Latitude is wonderful.

Give it a try today, you’ll enjoy the Latitude experience.

Okay, so you suspect your spouse is cheating and you want proof.  One of the first places to start is to track their vehicle so you know where they’ve been and where they are going.

The good news is tracking a vehicle using GPS is now simpler than ever and can be done covertly – that is without your spouse needing to know.

Tracking solutions have become very inexpensive and there are now literally hundreds of options, which for the uninformed makes choosing a tracker challenging.  I’ll provide you with some general information in this post, and more specific information and “how to insights” in later posts.

All trackers use one common trait, they use the US governments GPS satellite network to determine vehicle location.  Some trackers are passive, that is they don’t use cellular networks to transmit their location, these trackers are know as “GPS data loggers”.  They are useful for logging trip mileage for expense reporting, but just can’t give you the “real time” information you need to track your spouse.

So what you are looking for is a “wireless GPS tracker”.  Most of these devices were designed to track business fleet vehicles and need to be connected to the vehicle electrical system.  These hardwired devices are fine if you’re prepared to have the tracker installed in the vehicle, but I would not recommend this approach.  You need a battery operated device.  Hardwired trackers often require mounting of external antennas and for that reason, which just won’t work for covert tracking.

There is a new class of wireless tracker that uses advanced technology from Qualcomm, known as “assisted gps”.    Now I know you don’t need me geeking out on you, so here’s the net, these devices consume low power and can therefore operate for long periods on battery.  They also don’t need an external antenna and can determine their location without needing to have a clear view of the sky, so you can easily and quickly hide them inside the vehicle.

Law enforcement agencies have been using these solutions for years – yes, if you’ve been bad, they likely are tracking you.  You can now get exactly the same technology at a fraction of the price.  Here is a great example, the Best Buy Insignia “Little Buddy”, designed as a “Child Tracker”, this tracker will work just fine.

This product is a bit hard to find on the Best Buy site, you can simply use the link above to purchase.

Okay – coming up next will be a series of posts to show you exactly how to track your cheating spouse using the wireless gps tracker.
